In the 1950s, he created variations on the themes of the circle, the cross, the rhombus and the square, shapes that he felt summed up almost all of nature. He is one of the greatest contemporary matierist painters. You can recognise the painter's touch in the thickness of the material (a well-kept technical secret) and the burst of colour.
