The son of a blacksmith, Bram Bogart grew up in Delft in the Netherlands, where he studied painting. Pursuing his desire to become an artist, he enrolled at the Fine Arts School in The Hague. During the Second World War, he went into hiding to avoid forced labour imposed by the German army. After the liberation, he moved to Paris, then Belgium, where he became a naturalized citizen. His artistic career brought him into contact with movements such as Art Informel, the CoBrA group in Paris and the international Zéro group, but his work is above all marked by the gradual accentuation of its volumetric dimension. As he experimented, mixing mortar, siccative, chalk powder, varnish and pigments, Bram Bogart added more and more substance and thickness to his paintings, until they became high-reliefs, sculpture-paintings.
