BRANDT Sébastien. Stultifera navis. Basel, J. Bergmann de Olpe, 1497; in-4, 127 x 145 ff, [2 x 3] ff, 19th-century ebony half-maroquin, smooth spine decorated with gilt urns. Famous incunabulum known in France as La Nef des Fous. First Latin edition translated by Jacob Locher, decorated, like the German edition of 1494, with a series of beautiful woodcuts depicting human folly in all its aspects: passion for gambling, knowledge, hunting, love, travel, etc. Several artists collaborated on this work. Several artists collaborated on the illustrations, including Albrecht Dürer for most of the engravings. "This singular work was very popular at the time it was published, and its remarkable woodcuts still recommend it to the curious. The earliest known edition of this translation is the one we quote [1497]; but well-preserved copies are hard to find." (Brunet, I, 1203). Incomplete copy: the title leaf, leaves I to IX, XVI, XXV, XXXII, XXXIII, XL, XLI, XCVII, CIV, CXLV and the last leaf of the table, i.e. 9 figures, are missing. Staining, repairs to margins of first and last leaves, spine rubbed.
