Prefaced in verse and edited by Sebastian Brant, translated by Stephan Vigilius, and the distichs at the beginning of each chapter were written by Johannes Pinicianus. The 260 magnificent woodcuts are by the so-called "Petrarch master" Hans Weiditz, who was commissioned by Augsburg printers for the first German edition of the book in 1532. Some of the woodcuts also appeared in various translations of Cicero printed in Augsburg until the blocks were finally acquired by Egenolff, the publisher of the present edition, who used them in at least four editions.
