Lot no. 80
BREUGHEL Pieter II (1564 - 1638) Oil on oak panel with parquet "The Village Lawyer". Signed lower left P. Breughel and dated 1619. Flemish school. Provenance: estate of the Countess of Brouchoven de Bergeyck (1929-2021). Size: +/-52x82 cm. Pieter Breughel II, the eldest son of Pieter Breughel the Elder, was admitted to the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp in 1585. He reproduced his father's compositions, but also created original works such as this satirical depiction. The popularity of this scene led him to revisit the subject some thirty times between 1615 and 1630, and all the known versions remain virtually identical, apart from a few variations in the colour of some of the figures' clothes and in the decoration of the background wall. The caricatured faces and the abundance of accessory details remain almost the same, attesting to the probable use of cardboard and the popularity of this work.
