BRØNSTED (Peter Oluf). Travels in Greece accompanied by archaeological research. Paris, Firmin Didot, 1826-1830. 2 volumes in-folio, bradel percaline, untrimmed (19th century binding). Rare first edition.
These two issues, devoted respectively to the island of Céos (now Kea) and the Athenian Parthenon, are the only ones of the eight originally planned to be published. They include 28 plates out of text, some on double pages, and around thirty figures engraved in the text, some of which are coloured.
One of the rare first copies printed in folio format on wove paper.
The Danish archaeologist Peter Oluf Brøndsted (1780-1842) undertook a long journey to Greece from 1810 to 1813 in the company of his friends from the Xeneion association: Carl Haller von Hallerstein, Otto Magnus von Stackelberg and Jacob Linckh, who formed the first international association of archaeologists.
From the library of Jean Psichari (1854-1929), a famous Franco-Greek academic who was Renan's son-in-law and the father of Ernest Psichari, the author of Voyage du Centurion, with bookplate.
