Lot no. 40
Double clip brooch in platinum with 14k (585 thousandths) white gold fastenings, suggesting American production, consisting of two scrolls of diamonds and baguettes of synthetic blue sapphires. The smallest diamonds are 8x8 for approx. 0.02 ct. The larger diamonds are Old European, the largest approx. 0.40 ct and the smallest 0.15 ct. An easy-to-handle clasp on the back allows the two parts to be joined together in a single brooch or separated into two double-claw back clips.
Estimated total diamonds: 6 ct.
Dimensions: 7.2 x 4.2 cm.
Gross weight: 48.6 g.
This brooch from the late Art Deco period (1935/1940) is very representative of a trend towards very large brooches that could be transformed into double clips. An ingenious pin system enabled the jewel to be separated into two equally beautiful parts in a matter of seconds. These pieces of jewellery are very much in vogue today, as they allow a couple to wear one of the two parts each, and to be perfectly matched. Although this brooch is not signed, it is reminiscent of Paul Flato's Cascade brooch or his Casablanca brooch worn by Ingrid Bergman in the film of the same name. Paul Flato (1900-1999) was a New York-based jeweller who lit up Hollywood stars between the 1920s and 1940s. His style is highly recognisable and this brooch, although not named after him, has a hint of his style.
