BRONZE FIGURE “ALLEGORY OF ABUNDANCE” - The Embden Collection
Germany, probably Augsburg, 16th century. Attributable to the “Master of the Budapest Abundantia.”.
Dark brown patinated bronze. On a later rectangular marble plinth.
H without plinth 30 cm.
Patina rubbed. Small chips on the plinth.
Provenance:
The Arlette and Antony Embden Collection, France.
The bronze figure on offer can be compared to an allegorical figure of Abundance dating from around 1530–1540, which is kept in the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest (inv. no. 5311). The unknown artist is referred to as the Master of the Budapest Abundantia. Unlike most of his German contemporaries, who rarely drew on classical models, the works of this master show a more obvious influence from Antiquity. As with the Budapest model, the bronze figure on offer also lacks her attribute, probably a cornucopia. Another example by the same master shows an Abundantia as a fountain figure with the aforementioned cornucopia (cf. Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, Inv. No. 10081 and Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg, Inv. No. Pl.O.561). Depending on the model, the figure in contrapposto is supported by a ball under the left leg, as can be seen in the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest and in the Cleveland Museum of Art (Inv. No. 1971.104). See Ernst Friedrich Bange: Die Deutschen Bronzestatuetten des 16. Jahrhunderts. Berlin, 1949, Nos. 136–137 and William D. Wixom: Renaissance Bronzes from Ohio Collections. Ohio, 1975, No. 178.
