The model for Étoile [star] was created around 1935 and cast in bronze by the Fonderie Rudier from 1936. The original master-model can today be found in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. The lamp consists of a hexagonal shaft, which rests upon three square feet. In the upper part of the shaft, a star-shaped formation can be seen, which is composed of six triangular wings. The bronze surface is treated irregular, the edges are kept uneven.Étoile was designed by Giacometti in the '30s - together with other decorative art objects of a similar style - for designer Jean-Michel Frank. For example, he created another lamp using the star motif in the form of a floor lamp. The ‘star lamp’ is a work by Giacometti, whose production was resumed after the Second World War. Thus in the late 40s, models were sold among others in the Pierre Matisse Gallery, New York, and by the Compagnie des Arts Français. In the mid-50s Giacometti entrusted the edition of this table lamp to his brother Diego, who in 1962 commissioned Fonderie Susse with the production of further casts.

Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966)
Alberto Giacometti was born in Borgonovo in 1901 as son of the artist Giovanni Giacometti. He is considered a master sculptor of the 20th century. After studying for a short period of time in Geneva and Italy, he finally moved to Paris to study sculpture under Bourdelle from 1922-1925. During that time his art was influenced by impressionist and post-impressionist components. From 1925 on, his works diverged from naturalism and he began experimenting. From 1930-1935 he was associated with the surrealist movement. Then he began to develop his characteristic trait: emaciated and elongated figures, captured in space. This representation of isolated figures suggests a mental link to existentialism, all the more valid, because of his friendship with the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980). In the 1950s he took up painting and printmaking as his chief techniques of artistic expression. (nlu)
