BROWNE (W.G.). A new voyage in Upper and Lower Egypt, Syria and the Darfur, where no European had penetrated; made from 1792 to 1798. Translated from the English on the second edition by J. Castéra. Paris, Dentu, An VIII-1800. 2 volumes in-8 (197 x 120 mm), shagreened calf, spines decorated with gilt fleurons (Period bindings). First French edition. Map of Darfur (west of Sudan, on the Sahara and Sahel), map of the route followed by the Sudan caravan on its way from Egypt to Darfur, plan of the Sultan's residence and Egyptian temple based on Strabo's description. FIRST FORAY BY A EUROPEAN INTO DARFUR. Browne, who was trying to reach Abyssinia, joined a caravan of traders and followed the Caravan Route across the Egyptian desert. His journey was a veritable odyssey: robbed by his fellow travellers, kidnapped and held to ransom by the local authorities... he returned ruined, but brought back valuable information on these Islamic sultanates ruled by fanatical tyrants, living off the slave trade raided from neighbouring states, themselves threatened by the nomads, the scourge of the caravan routes. A VERY FINE COPY IN ATTRACTIVE CONTEMPORARY BINDINGS.
