FIRST FORAY BY A EUROPEAN INTO DARFUR. Browne, who was trying to reach Abyssinia, joined a caravan of traders and followed the Caravan Route across the Egyptian desert. His journey was a veritable odyssey: robbed by his fellow travellers, kidnapped and held to ransom by the local authorities... he returned ruined, but brought back valuable information on these Islamic sultanates ruled by fanatical tyrants, living off the slave trade raided from neighbouring states, themselves threatened by the nomads, the scourge of the caravan routes.
