Lot no. 9
BRUYN (Cornelis de). Voyage au Levant, i.e., in the principal places of Asia Minor, in the isles of Chio, Rhodes and Cyprus, etc., as well as in the most important cities of Egypt, Syria and the Holy Land. Paris, Guillaume Cavelier, 1714. In-folio, brown calf, spine decorated, spotted edges (Binding of the period). Second edition in French of this important voyage by the Dutch painter Cornelis de Bruyn (1652-1727), known in French as Corneille Le Brun, remarkably illustrated from his drawings and published at his own expense. The original Dutch edition, published in 1698, was translated into French two years later. "One of the best illustrated works on the Levant" (Cox). Magnificent engraved illustration including a frontispiece, a portrait of the author engraved by Valck after a painting by Kneller, a folded map and more than 210 burin-engraved figures in the text and on 97 plates outside the text, sometimes double-page or folded. "The very interesting plates in this work are almost all after designs by de Bruyn, who specialized in landscapes and interiors. Most of the plates are views including large panoramic scenes of Constantinople, Smyrna, Alexandria, and Jerusalem. The costume plates are of particular interest since Bruyn has concentrated almost entirely on Greek and Turkish female head-dresses" (Blackmer). A fine copy bound in contemporary style. Headbands missing, corners worn, one marbled endpaper removed, marginal cut on p. 317, a few leaves slightly foxed. Blackmer, n°225 - Röhricht, n°1184 - Gay, n°2101 - Cohen, 610 - Cox, I, 218.
