BUFFON (Georges-Louis Leclerc de). Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière. Paris, Dufart, an VIII [1799]-1808. 127 volumes in-8, fawn half-basane, spine decorated (Binding circa 1820). The most complete edition of Buffon's Histoire naturelle, edited by his former assistant Charles Sonnini de Manoncourt.
Buffon's Natural History occupies 64 volumes, followed by Fish and Cetaceans by Sonnini (14 vol.), Molluscs by Denys-Montfort and F. de Roissy (6 vol.), Reptiles by Daudin (8 vol.), Crustaceans and Insects by Latreille (14 vol.), Plants by Brisseau-Mirbel and Jolyclerc (18 vol.), and finally the Analytical Tables by P. Sue (3 vol.).
The illustrations include portraits of Buffon and Sonnini and more than 1100 zoological plates engraved after de Sève and Adèle Daudin, some of which are folded.
Minor damage to some headpieces, otherwise a fine set. Extensive dampstaining on about ten volumes, sometimes damaging the paper. Volume 42 comes from another copy.
