Lot no. 195
MAZARIN DESK, LOUIS XIV PERIOD
decorated with a luxuriant Boulle-type marquetry in the first part based on brass and red-tinted tortoiseshell in frames. The rich, floral design, dotted with grotesques, fantastic animals, birds, insects, cherubs and garlands, in a dense network of scrolls and leafy arabesques enlivened by figures, draws its sources from the work of Jean Bérain. At the centre of the marquetry on the stage are two musicians and a juggler under a canopy, supported by dancers with sunflowers. On the sides, a central bouquet of flowers with a dog and a monkey holding insects. The front of the cabinet has a central drawer, a door and two side panels, each containing three drawers. The late 18th century cambered base, in courbaril veneer with bronze filleting, ends in a leafy hoof. The top is encircled by a moulding.
