BYZANTINE GOLD COIN DEPICTING AN EMPEROR IN A GOLD FRAME
Ca. AD 945 - 959.
A gold solidus struck under Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus and Romanus II. The reverse depicts a facing bust of Christ with a beaded nimbus, raising his right hand in benediction and holding the Gospels in his left; inscribed "+IhS XPS REX REGNANTIUM" in the field. The obverse presents the crowned facing busts of Constantine VII and Romanus II, each wearing loros and holding a long patriarchal cross between them. Set in a modern gold pendant setting.
