BYZANTINE GOLD RING WITH NIELLO MONOGRAM. Ca. 600 AD. A gold ring with a broad, rounded hoop that slightly tapers towards the back. The circular bezel is slightly convex and is decorated with a monogram inlaid with niello, consisting of a central cross intersecting a circular motif, with additional letters extending from the arms. The hoop is decorated with niello-inlaid motifs, forming a continuous pattern along the exterior.
