BYZANTINE HIGH KARAT GOLD AND NIELLO RING WITH INSCRIPTION OMONOIA.
Ca. AD 600 - 700 A gold marriage ring with a hoop of plain circular section and a flat oval bezel engraved and nielloed with a standing Christ between a couple. The central figure of Christ, with a cruciform halo, extends his arms over the shoulders of the two flanking figures. Above and below the scene runs the inscription OMONOIA, with ΟΜΟ above and ΝΟΙΑ beneath, meaning 'concord'. Size: D:18.95mm / US: 9 / UK: R 1/2; Weight: 5.7g. Provenance: Private London collection; acquired in Germany; formerly with Mr. Toussaint collection, Holland 1980s-1990s.
