BYZANTINE HIGH KARAT GOLD CROSS PENDANT WITH CENTRAL RED GARNET CABOCHON.
Ca. AD 600 - 800 A gold cross pendant with tubular arms decorated along their length with braided wires, meeting at a hollow lozenge-shaped central box. The junctions of the arms are marked by rounded bosses, and the centre is set with a small circular bezel containing a red garnet cabochon. A broad cylindrical suspension tube is mounted transversely above the upper arm. Size: 51mm x 41mm; Weight: 7.8g. Provenance: Private London collection; acquired in Germany; formerly with S.T. collection, Switzerland, 1980s-2000s. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
