BYZANTINE HIGH KARAT GOLD CROSS WITH CENTRAL RED GARNET CABOCHON AND FOUR REPOUSSÉ MEDALLIONS.
Ca. AD 600 - 800 A gold pendant in the form of a cross, each arm composed of a medallion with an outer ribbed border, an inner raised plain band and a central repoussé motif framed by two applied granules at the perimeter. A garnet cabochon is set in a raised bezel at the centre of the cross, a suspension loop rises from the apex, and the reverse is plain. Size: 50mm x 42mm; Weight: 7g. Provenance: Private London collection; acquired in Germany; formerly with S.T. collection, Switzerland, 1980s-2000s. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
