BYZANTINE HIGH KARAT GOLD PENDANT SET WITH GLASS INTAGLIO DEPICTING A PEACOCK Ca. AD 300 - 500. An oval glass cameo in layered dark red and white, carved in low relief with a peacock in left profile, its head raised and tail fanned behind, each feather defined with incised lines and concentric circles. The stone is framed in a gold mount with a grooved outer border and plain inner bezel. Two looped attachments extend from either side, likely for suspension. For similar see: C. Entwistle and N.
