BYZANTINE MARRIAGE HIGH KARAT GOLD AND NIELLO RING DEPICTING A COUPLE AND INSCRIPTION OMONOIA.
Ca. AD 400 - 600 A gold wedding ring with a solid hoop and a square bezel with paired corner bosses. The flat field is engraved and nielloed with a frontal couple flanking a tall cross, their heads detailed with dotted hair and simple facial features. Beneath, a horizontal panel contains the Greek inscription OMONOIA, meaning 'concord'. Size: D:17.32mm / US: 7 / UK: N 1/2; Weight: 4.7g. Provenance: Private UK collection; acquired in Germany; formerly with A. Moser collection, Switzerland 1990s-2000.
