BYZANTINE SGRAFFITO WARE CUP WITH CENTRAL STAR - EX ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM. Ca. AD 1500 A sgraffito ware cup with a broad everted rim, rounded wall and tapering lower body set on a short ring foot. The exterior is covered in a pale slip and decorated below the rim with a frieze of incised zigzag between double horizontal lines, the lower part left plain. The interior is centred on a small green-glazed star over an abstract motif, with concentric grooves running around the upper wall beneath the lip. Size: 70mm x 135mm; Weight: 238g. Provenance: Property of a central London gallery; Ex collection of James Alfred Brew (1923–2008), collected in Cyprus during the 1960s, thence by descent to Elaine Brew Discovered in Elea This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
