BYZANTINE SGRAFFITO WARE FOOTED CUP WITH CROSS AND LEAVES MOTIF - EX ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM.
Ca. AD 1300 - 1400 A sgraffito ware cup with a deep bowl on a tall conical lower body rising from a broad circular foot. The straight upper wall is encircled by a frieze of incised stylised leaves and tendrils between double horizontal lines, with splashes of green and amber glaze over a pale slip. The interior shows an incised cross within a circular frame, the arms dividing the field into four compartments, each containing leaf motifs with touches of green and yellow glaze. Size: 115mm x 130mm; Weight: 508g. Provenance: Property of a central London gallery; Ex collection of James Alfred Brew (1923–2008), collected in Cyprus during the 1960s. Thence by descent to Elaine Brew Discovered in Paphos This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
