BYZANTINE SGRAFFITO WARE FOOTED CUP WITH FISH - EX ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM. Ca. AD 1300 - 1400 A sgraffito ware cup with a wide rounded body on a tapering lower section set over a low ring foot. The interior is coated in a honey-brown glaze with green splashes and decorated in sgraffito with a central medallion enclosing a fish framed by concentric lines. Around this runs a frieze of large lobes and interlacing curvilinear motifs filling the cavetto up to a plain band below the lip. The glaze extends over the upper exterior. Size: 90mm x 165mm; Weight: 390g. Provenance: Property of a central London gallery; Ex collection of James Alfred Brew (1923–2008), collected in Cyprus during the 1960s, thence by descent to Elaine Brew Discovered in Elea This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter. Formerly in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford.
