BYZANTINE SGRAFFITO WARE FOOTED CUP WITH SHIELD - EX ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM.
Ca. AD 1300 - 1400 A sgraffito ware footed cup with a broad bowl set on a slender stem and low circular foot, the lip rounded and slightly thickened. The exterior is covered in a green glaze over the body and stem. The interior is coated in a white slip and decorated in sgraffito with a central shield-shaped motif framed by a plain circular band, enclosed within a broad frieze of alternating green and yellow triangular panels with circular motifs filling the spaces between, and a further band of alternating coloured segments around the rim. Size: 79mm x 142mm; Weight: 344g. Provenance: Property of a central London gallery; Ex collection of James Alfred Brew (1923–2008), collected in Cyprus during the 1960s, thence by descent to Elaine Brew Discovered in Elea This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
