BYZANTINE SILVER-GILT ENKOLPION WITH CRUCIFIXION. Ca. AD 1000 - 1200. A silver-gilt enkolpion cross formed from two flat cruciform plates hinged at the top and bottom, with a cylindrical suspension aperture above, each face framed by a fine beaded border. One face bears a gilt crucified Jesus, the nimbus surmounted by a small cross, accompanied by the title abbreviations HC XC; the opposite face shows a gilt standing Virgin in orans, flanked at shoulder height by the inscriptions MP __.
