BYZANTINE TERRACOTTA OIL LAMP WITH BISHOP HOLDING A SCEPTRE
Ca. AD 300 - 500. A red terracotta oil lamp with a round body and a recessed tondo depicting a bishop standing and holding a sceptre in his right hand. Filling holes are positioned on either side of the figure. The tondo is encircled by a decorative register of drop-shaped motifs with pairs of fine granules at each end. The discus is bordered by a ridge that extends around the nozzle, forming a broad channel. The nozzle is flanked by pseudo volutes, and the base consists of a raised, rounded ring.
