BYZANTINE TERRACOTTA OIL LAMP WITH CHI-RHO
Ca. AD 400 - 500. A red terracotta oil lamp with a rounded body and a sunken upper face bordered by a ridge and channelled to a spout. The central discus displays a relief depiction of a Chi-Rho, an early Christian symbol combining the Greek letters 'Χ' (Chi) and 'Ρ' (Rho), representing Christ. On both sides are circular filling holes, and the perimeter is adorned with alternating concentric circles and quatrefoil patterns. The lamp has a lug handle and rests on a ring base marked with two concentric circles. For similar see: The Ashmolean Museum, Accession no. AN1980.76. Size: 140mm x 85mm; Weight: 170g.
