BYZANTINE TERRACOTTA OIL LAMP WITH STYLISED CHI-RHO AND HEAD OF APOSTLES Ca. AD 300 - 500. A red terracotta oil lamp with a rounded body and a sunken discus containing two filling holes flanking a central Chi-Rho, a symbol combining the Greek letters 'Χ' and 'Ρ' representing Christ. The spout bears traces of darkened marks from use. The perimeter is embellished with depictions of twelve apostolic heads. The base is bordered by a ridge, with another ridge extending towards the handle, and two concentric circles at its centre. Size: 105mm x 60mm; Weight: 60g. Provenance: Property of a London gallery, acquired on the German art market; Ex. West German private collection HH, before 2010. This piece is accompanied by German export license.
