CABINET, ATTRIBUTED TO CHARLES HUNSINGER, LATE 19th CENTURY in ebony, veneered with ebony, bois de rapport, rosewood and celluloid, marquetry decorated with frames and fillets of reserves, some with a background of marquetry of cubes or lozenges decorated with flowers, flowering vases and dragonflies, a symbol of metamorphosis. It opens to reveal two leaves and a drawer with an integrated sliding shelf. It stands on a base of moulded panels at the back and at the front on two partly fluted Doric columns joined by a moulded plinth base with curved legs at the front and straight legs at the back. Charles Hunsinger (1823-1893) A master of marquetry, he is recognised as a major cabinetmaker of the 19th century. He took part in the Universal Exhibitions and the Central Union Exhibitions, where he received numerous medals and honours.
