This elegant cabinet or armoire-dressoir bears all the hallmarks of Grenoble's work, and more particularly that of Thomas Hache (1664-1747), in terms of its construction, the type of wood used and the rich floral marquetry or frieze decoration such as that of the "little hands" found on the base at the top of the ball feet.
Marianne Clerc has attributed to Thomas Hache a cabinet known as an armoire-dressoir (the interior is not fitted with drawers) with similar, though less luxuriant, decoration.
It is in the Musée Dauphinois and illustrated in
M. Clerc, Hache, ébénistes à Grenoble, Musée Dauphinois, Glenat, 1997, p. 34-35. However, this attribution is questioned by Pierre and Françoise Rouge in their book
Le Génie des Hache, Faton, Dijon, 2005, p. 517, who see it as the work of Michel Chevallier, father-in-law of Thomas Hache, who married his daughter in 1695. His work was strongly influenced by the personality of this talented journeyman who became his son-in-law from Chambery, where he drew inspiration and expertise from Italian sources.
