Historical background: Families who emigrated to Europe after the French Revolution mourned the beheading of Queen Marie-Antoinette. Namur's fine black earthenware is unique in the production of the late 18th century. It is a very dark, almost black, red-brown hard earthenware that is very similar to fine red stoneware, with a very shiny black vitrified glaze and rich, finely chased silver trim. Its colour is inspired by British terracotta. The production of black earthenware tableware in Namur at the end of the 18th century was limited because it was made from a very small deposit of black clay located in Bonneville; it was intended for the aristocracy and bourgeoisie of the county of Namur. Coffeepots and other objects made from this clay can be found in the collections of several museums.
