Iconum anatomicarum explicatio: 310 pp. - 336 pp. - 277 pp.
The only edition of the most monumental anatomical atlas ever produced.
A very rare work that is missing from the main collections, it consists of 264 plates, 197 of which are double plates with a line reproduction opposite. Superb typographical achievement printed on beautiful strong paper.
Leopoldo Marcantonio Caldani (1725-1813) was a professor of anatomy in Padua. His nephew Floriano (1772 - 1836) assisted him with this considerable work. Some of the plates are based on Caldani's work, but most are large-format reproductions of the best eighteenth-century anatomical plates by the engravers Ferdinando de Martiis, Francesco dal Pedro, Pietro Zuliani, Giovanni Battista Torcellano of Murano, Perini and Butafoco.
"For example, the representations of bones and muscles follow Albinus, the teeth and sexual organs are after John Hunter, the lymphatics after Mascagni, and the pregnant uterus and embryos after William Hunter and Soemmerring. Among the other major anatomists represented are Monro, Scarpa, Cruikshank, Ruysch, Loder, Cotugno, Haller, Sandifort, Santorini, and Camper", says Heirs of Hippocrates 962.
A fine copy with full margins, incomplete with the last volume of text (explanation of plates 205 to 264). Some light spotting, some bindings worn.
