Lot no. 245
TURNED AND CARVED WOODEN CHALICE, ENGLAND, 19TH CENTURY finely carved in low relief with stylised decoration and bearing the following inscriptions: on the rim HE LIVED NOT FOR AN AGE BUT FOR ALL TIME, in the base SHAKESPEARES MULBERRY WOOD FROM NEW PLACE, on the reverse J. MARSHALL CARVER STRATFORD ON AVON; defects, little wear, minor cracks in the body and base Cm 22X9,5 A CARVED WOOD GOBLET, ENGLAND, 19TH CENTURY; DEFECTS, MINOR DAMAGES This fine chalice bears the following inscriptions: ; at the top, 'He lived not for an age but for ever' (from Ben Jonson's eulogy) ; at the bottom, 'Shakespeare's Mulberry Wood from New Place'. ; below the base, 'J. Marshall carver in Stratford-upon-Avon'. These inscriptions fuel the legend that the work was carved from the wood of the mulberry tree that stood near Shakespeare's house in New Place and was felled in 1756 by the Reverend Francis Gastrell (then owner), annoyed by the many visitors paying homage to the famous tree. After its demolition in 1759, and following archaeological excavations between 1862 and 1864 on the initiative of James Orchard Halliwell-Phillipps, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust acquired New Place and Nash's House in 1876.
