ORIGINAL EDITION, print run A (Brigitte Moreau-Renouard, IV n°521). RARISSIVE IN PRIVATE HAND: no copy has come to public sale for fifty years. It is dedicated to Claude de Hangest, Calvin's childhood friend and a member of the de Hangest de Montmort family with whom he was raised. A PRECIOUS COPY, WITH LARGE MARGINS, OF JACQUES-AUGUSTE DE THOU WITH HIS ARMS ON THE BOARDS. A niece of Jacques-Auguste de Thou, Jacqueline, married Daniel de Hangest some time later. Sold almost in its entirety to Charron de Ménars (1680), the library of J.-A. de Thou was then acquired (1706) by the Cardinal de Rohan who bequeathed it to his grand-nephew the Prince de Soubise (Soubise mark on the first flyleaf). Damage to the binding (part of the spine is missing and the boards are slightly damaged, the epidermis has been restored). The copy belonged in the 19th century to Ernest Stroehlin (1844-1907; ex-libris), a great historian of Protestantism (cat. 1912 n°599; the binding is said to be "restored").
