Camillo Merlo was a Turin painter active between the end of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century, best known for his naturalistic landscapes. He trained following the teachings of Vittorio and Marco Calderini, the latter of whom particularly influenced him, directing him towards a mimetic painting, attentive to the realistic rendering of nature.
His works focus mainly on lake and rural landscapes, with a predilection for views of Lake Orta, Lake Maggiore, the hills of Piedmont and views of Liguria. His paintings convey tranquillity and introspection, often characterised by misty atmospheres, clear skies and reflections on water, typical of northern Italian climates. Merlo was also a very precise draughtsman, with an elegant and controlled stroke. His palette is sober, composed of natural and modulated tones, capable of delicately conveying the impression of the real landscape.
