[RUSSIAN CAMPAIGN]. BOURGOGNE, Adrien Jean Baptiste François. Memoirs of Sergeant Bourgogne on the Russian Campaign (1812-1813). Fort in-folio of 845 pp, green half-chagrin, spine ribbed (post.) Original manuscript of the Memoirs of Sergeant Bourgogne (1785-1867), published by Paul Cottin in Paris with Hachette in 1898. These extraordinary memoirs were first published in 1896-1897 in the Nouvelle Revue Rétrospective. They belong to the popular mythical accounts of these epics, in the same way as those of Parquin or Coignet. The account of the Russian campaign - and especially the retreat - by this simple sergeant is particularly gripping.
