Lot no. 112
CAMUS (Albert). L'Étranger. Paris, Gallimard, 1942. In-12, black half-maroquin with corners, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine, edged slipcase (Boichot). First edition. Albert Camus's first published novel, it was not printed in large paper. One of only 500 copies without edition number placed on the market. The print run of the edition - 4000 copies, plus 400 reserved for the press - was in fact divided into eight instalments of 500 copies each, seven of which bear a publisher's imprint on the title and cover. A very fine, perfectly established copy. L'Étranger, now translated into sixty-eight languages, is the third most widely read French-language novel in the world, after Le Petit Prince and Vingt mille lieues sous les mers.
