Capraio Barbaricino 1925 oil on canvas 101 x 65 cm The painting depicts an elderly Barbaricino shepherd caught frontally while clutching a long pastoral staff. The character, characterised by an intense physiognomic expressiveness and a thick white beard, wears traditional Sardinian costume with a dark headdress, a white shirt with wide sleeves and a heavy leather or fur waistcoat, according to the typical pastoral style of Barbagia. In the background, rural huts and a barely visible landscape can be glimpsed, which contributes to placing the scene within a rural and identity context. The work is part of the regionalist and ethnographic trend that developed in Italy in the first decades of the 20th century, aimed at the representation of popular cultures and local traditions. In this case, documentary interest is combined with a concise and direct painting, played on the contrast between the earthy tones of the background and the strong luminosity of the white shirt that enhances the hollow face of the protagonist. The inscription 'Capraro Barbaricino - Dorgali' gives the work a precise testimonial value, identifying the subject as a representative of the pastoral tradition of inland Sardinia. The painting thus appears to be conceived not only as an individual portrait, but also as a symbolic image of Barbaricino culture, observed with realist sensitivity and human participation.
