Rare American Greene Model 1854 breech loading 54 calibre rifle with Greene's patented Maynard's system, manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Co under British contract during the Crimean War, it was made in limited numbers for the United States and Great Britain, the United States bought 200 rifles and Great Britain 2000, unfortunately the majority were resold to civilians and some to the Americans for the American Civil War or destroyed for parts and it is estimated that perhaps 200/300 examples are still complete. The lock is marked Mass.Arms Co shioopee falls U.S.A 1856 as well as the British crown VxR and on the door Maynard's Patent Sep. 22. 1845. On the top Greene Patent June. 27. 1854. Each piece is stamped A2 under crown and barrel with a Large S, serial number 675. x Length 87cm. Good condition and retains 80% of its original tanning (patina) which is even rarer, working mechanism, some light dings on the stock, which is normal for its age.
