CARDANO (Gerolamo). Les Livres... intitulez de la Subtilité, & subtiles inventions, ensemble les causes occultes, et raisons d'icelles. Paris, Pierre Cavellat, 1578. In-8, supple vellum with covers (contemporary binding). New edition of the French translation by Richard Le Blanc, published in 1556. It is illustrated with numerous figures in the text. This vast scientific encyclopaedia, dealing with cosmology, alchemy, mechanics, biology and physics, offers a synthesis of the occult sciences studied by Cardan (see the last four books on miracles, angels and demons) and the so-called natural sciences. The 21 chapters of this highly curious work are said by Stanislas de Guaita to be "esoterically based on the XXI Arcana of the Tarot". From the Henry Guerlac library, with bookplate. Mottling. Loss on one headpiece.
