CARELLI DE ROCCA CASTELLO (Jacques). An ascent of Mont Blanc in 1843. Varallo, by the widow Caligaris, 1843. In-12, full black chagrin binding, gilt itre on front cover, small gilt rosette on spine (Modern binding). First edition. An account of the twenty-eighth ascent of Mont Blanc, and the second by an Italian. This ascent, made by the "Ancien Passage", took place in bad weather and difficult conditions.
An extremely rare brochure, of which Meckly cites the three known copies: National Library of Scotland, Alpine Club, and one copy in Italy (Turin section of the C.A.I. according to Ferrand). Bookplate pasted on the flyleaf. Old handwritten note in ink on the last blank page "Donné par l'auteur". List of 5 brochures in the same hand on the last flyleaf, including this ascent of Mont Blanc at no. 5.
Chevalier Caralli de Rocca Castello was the second Italian to climb Mont Blanc in 1843, after the Marquis de Sant' Angelo who had reached the summit in 1840, after a first attempt in 1842 failed because of the weather (28th ascent).
