Lot no. 670
Carl Franz Michael Geyling (Wien 1814-1880) (Vienna 1814–1880) A View of the Churches of Kalksburg and Rodaun at Dawn, signed, dated K. Geyling 1842, oil on canvas, 63 x 79 cm, framed Carl Franz Michael Geyling (Wien 1814-1880) Blick auf die Kirchen von Kalksburg und Rodaun mit Morgenröte, signiert, datiert K. Geyling 1842, Öl auf Leinwand, 63 x 79 cm, gerahmt Karl Franz Michael Geyling studied in Vienna with Joseph Mößmer and Anton Petter before traveling to Italy in order to continue his studies. He was later commissioned to paint diverse land and cityscapes on glass at the Mariannentempel in Laxenburg, which led to him to mastering a new technique at which he proved to be very successful. Furthermore, Geyling founded a glass painting workshop in Vienna 1841, where many members of his family subsequently trained and worked. His career culminated with his appointment as “Imperial Glass painter” (K. u. k. Hofglasmaler) 1872. Besides his work on glass, Geyling also painted several landscapes on canvas, such as the two following lots depicting views of Kalksburg. Located south of the Viennese woods and now belonging to the Viennese district Liesing, Kalksburg used to be a small rural village. The Imperial jeweller Franz von Mack acquired the area 1790 and built several classicistic buildings, including the here depicted parish. Here Geyling executed two particularly atmospheric scenes of an idyllic countryside setting, from which we can well picture how a typical 19th century Viennese suburb must have looked like.
