Lot no. 1617
Carl Reichert (1836 Vienna - 1918 Graz)
Pair of paintings "Wie du mir" - "so ich dir!". Original title
Counterparts. Two young kittens and a magnificent macaw are portrayed in sensitively and subtly depicted, narrative scenes. While at first the two playful kittens tease the seemingly defenceless parrot bird, which has been put on a chain, the bird defends itself the next moment and the troublemakers flee in fright. This is Reichert's characteristic subject, which he realised several times in his oeuvre, sometimes with variations. Reichert came from a family of Austrian artists; his father Heinrich was a portrait and animal painter. Carl himself studied in Graz and Munich as well as in Rome in 1866/67 under Ludwig Johann Passini and Anton Romako. He specialised in amiable, closely observed depictions of animals. Oil/wood panel. Each signed lower right under the pseudonym "J(ulius). Hartung" and titled verso. 20.5 cm x 31.5 cm. Frame.
A pair of paintings. Oil on wooden panel. Each signed with his pseudonym "J(ulius). Hartung". Each inscribed with title on the reverse.
