He studied at the Munich Art School and Academy under Gabriel von Hackl and Carl von Marr. After completing his studies, Schwalbach lived and worked in Munich. He created life-size nudes and groups of nudes in landscapes, whose delicate, muted colours evoke a lyrical mood that has sometimes been compared to "magical realism."
