Schwabe 12.2 x 11.02 in. 31.0 x 22.0 cm Provenance: Gérard Lévy Collection ; Then by descent Bibliography: Jumeau-Lafond, Jean-David, Carlos Schwabe, Symboliste et visionnaire, ACR Edition, 1994, reproduced p. 195: "Le Jour et la nuit, dessin pour un almanach". Depicting a languorous embrace between the allegories of day and night, represented respectively by a naked man and a woman draped entirely in black, our drawing relates to a project for an almanac for the publisher Édouard Pelletan. A number of beautiful small sketches have survived from this project, whose movements and motifs suggest a cosmological iconography. We would like to thank Mr Jean-David Jumeau-Lafond for confirming the authenticity of this work by means of a visual examination on 28 November 2024, and for his invaluable assistance in writing this notice.
