Lot no. 371
Paratrooper Heinz Paulisch's notebook, heavily damaged copy, with passport photograph present but very faded. Feldpost number 63022, corresponding to Stab FallschirmPionierBataillon 5. The booklet contains some photographs and banknotes. Paratrooper Heinz Paulisch died at Dahl on 25 December 1944 and is buried at Sandweiler Cemetery, Luxembourg, Block J, Row 11, Grave 251. One of the documents is signed by Mertins, one of the paratroopers who delivered Mussolini. The set shows marked wear and a period patina. Condition II+. The FallschirmPionierBataillon 5 was a Luftwaffe parachute engineering unit, part of the 5th Parachute Division (5. FallschirmjagerDivision), commanded by Generalmajor Ludwig Heilmann. This division was engaged on the southern front of the Battle of the Bulge (16 December 1944 - January 1945), mainly in Luxembourg and the Bastogne region. The battalion played a crucial role from the start of the offensive. On 16 December 1944, after artillery preparation, it built bridges over the Our river near Vianden and Roth an der Our, enabling parachute regiments 13 and 15 to cross successfully. The 4th Company, under the command of Leutnant Hans Prigge, took the town of Vianden on the morning of 16 December. Prigge was then killed near Livarchamps in Belgium. On 19 December, the 1st Company, led by Leutnant Walter Sander, attacked and neutralised the 687th US Field Artillery Battalion at Wiltz. The 5th Parachute Division was the only German unit to achieve its initial objective of establishing a defensive line south of Bastogne. However, at the end of December 1944, the 3rd US Army, under the command of General Patton, broke through the division's lines. In January 1945, the division withdrew through Luxembourg, reaching the village of Dasburg on the German side at the end of the month. FallschirmPionierBattalion 5 was commanded by Major Gerhard Mertins, a veteran recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. He had previously taken part in the operation to liberate Mussolini in 1943 and had supervised the encirclement of Falaise in August 1944. Notebook of paratrooper Heinz Paulisch, heavily damaged copy with a deteriorated ID photo still present. Feldpost number 63022 corresponds to Stab FallschirmPionierBataillon 5. The notebook includes a few photographs and banknotes. Heinz Paulisch died on December 25, 1944, in Dahl and is buried at Sandweiler Cemetery in Luxembourg, Block J, Row 11, Grave 251. One document is signed by Mertins, one of the paratroopers involved in Mussolini's rescue. The notebook shows heavy wear and period patina. Condition II+. FallschirmPionierBataillon 5 was a Luftwaffe airborne engineer unit within the 5th Parachute Division (5. FallschirmjagerDivision), commanded by Generalmajor Ludwig Heilmann. This division fought on the southern front of the Battle of the Bulge (December 16, 1944 - January 1945), mainly in Luxembourg and around Bastogne. The battalion played a key role at the start of the offensive. On December 16, 1944, after an artillery barrage, it built bridges across the Our River near Vianden and Roth an der Our, allowing the 13th and 15th Parachute Regiments to cross. The 4th Company, under Leutnant Hans Prigge, captured Vianden on the morning of the 16th. Prigge was later killed near Livarchamps, Belgium. On December 19, the 1st Company, led by Leutnant Walter Sander, attacked and neutralized the 687th US Field Artillery Battalion in Wiltz. The 5th Parachute Division was the only German unit to reach its initial objective-establishing a defensive line south of Bastogne. By late December 1944, however, General Patton's 3rd Army broke through the division's lines. In January 1945, the division retreated through Luxembourg, reaching Dasburg on the German side by month's end. FallschirmPionierBataillon 5 was commanded by Major Gerhard Mertins, a decorated veteran who had received the Knight's Cross. He had previously participated in the 1943 mission to rescue Mussolini and survived the Falaise encirclement in August 1944.
