Calligraphy tile in lustre and cobalt Siliceous paste with moulded and painted lustre, cobalt and turquoise decoration under a transparent colourless glaze, in a gilded wooden frame Iran, Kashan, 13th-14th century, Ilkhanid period H. 31 cm - W. 30 cm AR Broken and glued, restorations, probably partly reduced. The central register is decorated with cobalt calligraphy in relief, on a background painted in lustre and turquoise with foliage scattered with birds and various animals. The upper part features a frieze of birds on a floral background, and the lower part a fine frieze of pseudo-calligraphy. This decoration is reminiscent of a group of tiles known to have adorned the walls of the tomb of Nur al-Din 'Abd al-Samad in Natanz (whose tiles and calligraphy are larger).
