Robert Carswell, a Scottish physician born in 1793, was a talented draughtsman. Having qualified as a doctor, he travelled to Paris and Lyon to draw and paint watercolours in hospitals and mortuaries. By the time he left Paris, he had produced more than 1,000 paintings. At the age of 35, he was awarded the chair of pathological anatomy at London University. He was physician to King Leopold I of Belgium and treated Louis Philippe in exile in London.
This publication was considered to be the most accurate medical illustration ever produced before the invention of photography.
