LOUIS XVI PERIOD WALL SCONCE Attributed to Brecourt In chased ormolu and black lacquered sheet metal, the white enamelled dial signed "LEPAUTE / A PARIS" inscribed in a case surmounted by a flame and flanked by winged women, the bracket surrounded by a torus of grained laurel, the lamp base ending in a pinecone motif. A Louis XVI gilt-bronze and patinated tole cartel d'applique, attributed to Brecourt Stylistically dated to circa 1775, this wall-mounted cartel can be attributed to the bronzemaker Brecourt on the basis of a drawing (cf. fig. 1) from a collection of cartel and clock models held at the Bibliothèque Doucet in Paris (VI E 15 Rés) bearing the number 113 with the mention Brecourt. A similar wall clock is in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and illustrated in Tardy, La Pendule Française du Louis XVI à nos jours, Paris, 1974-1975, Vol. II, p. 308, fig. 5. This model differs from our example in that there is no flame at the top and the pedestal is slightly different, repeating the neck of the vase decorated with canals. A second example has a dial and movement signed by Lieutaud; it has a pedestal identical to ours and is distinguished by the presence of a ribbon bow which replaces the flame on our model. It was included in the Le Folie d'Artois exhibition held at the Château de Bagatelle in 1988 and is illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Encyclopédie de la Pendule Française du Moyen Âge au XXe siècle, Les Editions de l'Amateur, Paris, 1997, p. 195, fig. C. *Information for buyers: The auction is exclusive of VAT.
