CARTIER (Attributed to) SMALL BULLDOG In blood jasper, the yellow gold necklace holding a fine pearl (untested), the eyes studded with small rubies set in a closed setting. Circa 1910. A blood jasper, ruby, natural pearl (not tested) and 18k gold "bulldog" miniature sculpture, attributed to Cartier. Circa 1910. Related works: - An agate bulldog, the gold collar holding a pearl, the eyes studded with demantoid garnets, circa 1907. Unsigned. Palais Royal Collection. Reproduced p. 63 in the book "Cartier: objets d'exception" by Olivier Bachet and Alain Cartier, 2019, Paris, Editions du Palais Royal. Note: In 1907, King Edward VII of England commissioned a menagerie of animals sculpted in hard stone from the House of Fabergé. These small precious objects were a European success, and Cartier launched production in its own workshops the same year. Often mistaken for Fabergé, Cartier nevertheless stood out for his more realistic postures and features. He fashioned more than 1,300 animals, including a number of French bulldogs, unknown to the Fabergé goldsmiths. RC : Small accident to the ear (repaired). Height: 4.1 cm. Gross weight: 24.5 g (18k - 750).
